Independent Living Studio

The Independent Living Studio (ILS) provides training for persons with disabilities to develop essential daily living skills in a simulated HDB flat. Offering a realistic environment that brings learning beyond the classroom, ILS helps to build and reinforce competence, confidence, and decision-making skills for independent living.

Featuring smart home and assistive technologies, ILS also offers trainees the option to stay overnight for hands-on practice in a safe and supported environment.

Our Partners

The Independent Living Studio is jointly managed by SG Enable and TOUCH Community Services, and supported by SPD.

The programme is made possible by the generous sponsorship of the Enabling Lives Initiative Grant and Mr Loh Kiong Poot. The interior design, home fittings and furnishings sponsored by IKEA Singapore.

Modelled after HDB Homes

ILS is built to reflect standard HDB homes — including their common accessibility limitations — so trainees can build independent living skills in a familiar, real-world setting.

Modelled after a 4-room HDB flat and a Community Care Apartment (CCA), the two units replicate typical home features such as living room area, a working kitchen, bedroom spaces, and bathroom facilities.

Within this realistic layout, ILS introduces practical and achievable home adaptations. This helps trainees and caregivers identify simple ways to make  HDB homes safer and more supportive for independent living.

Supported by Assistive Technologies and Smart Home Devices

Smart home devices and assistive technologies are thoughtfully incorporated into the ILS units to support training and skills development. They provide practical demonstrations of how technology can be used to promote greater independence in managing the home environment more effectively. Devices are selected based on the trainee’s disability profile and needs, ranging from simple, low-tech tools to solutions with more built-in technology.

Modular Training and Progressive Skills Development

Through modular training in Daily Living Skills, mapped to the Enabling Skills and Competency Framework, participants develop competencies in the Home Living domain such as meal preparation, housekeeping, and home planning and safety. This structured, progressive approach equips persons with disabilities to live more independently and confidently at home and in the community.
